One of the world’s most famous ski resorts, St Anton am Arlberg is well known for its seriously challenging slopes, abundant snowfall, and legendary après ski.

340km of piste with 141 runs served by 94 lifts, in addition to over 200km of backcountry trails and off piste terrain make St Anton the largest ski area in Austria, as well as being one of the most beautiful.

The vertical drop on the mountain is nearly 5000 feet, and the longest run extends to nearly 6 miles in length.

Hard core expert skiers can get their thrills on the extreme off piste terrain — some of which cannot be accessed without a guide — featuring tree skiing, bumps, nail biting chutes and more, or on the 13% steep black runs.

Roughly a third of trails are fast reds, and cover over 1000 meters of varied terrain where advanced skiers and snowboarders to test their metal. Intermediates too will find a wealth of challenging blues, particularly in the north facing Rendl ski area.

As the terrain here is so demanding, St Anton has less to offer beginners. However, there are a few nursery slopes for novices, and an first-class ski school.

Freestylers can hone their skills in the resort’s terrain parks, which feature rails and kickers, barriers, ramps, pipes, and boxes suitable for all abilities. This is a cult ski resort, so be aware that slopes can get crowded.

St Anton’s reputation for incredible après ski is world wide, and the streets of St Anton village are party central — bordered by rows of restaurants and bars.

There are plenty of venues with live music late into the night, and over 70 different restaurants to choose from serving everything from delicious traditional Austrian fare to gourmet cuisine.

Slope side, the Krazy Kanguruh and Mooserwirt bars are famed for their fun, friendly atmosphere and raucous drinking, table dancing, and singing sessions.

Sölden

Big and busy but with lots to offer, Sölden ski resort lies in the resplendent Ötztal Valley and encompasses two glaciers and three different mountains, each with spectacular summits over 3000 meters high.

Each year Sölden hosts the opening event of the FIS Ski World Cup, chosen for its sure snowfall with additional good snowmaking coverage, 1990 meter vertical, and excellent mix of terrain which includes the longest ski trail in the country at 15km.

145 kilometers of slopes over 350 skiable acres have 45 pistes split into 49% blue, 32% red, and 19% black runs and are serviced by a superb ski lift system consisting mainly of gondolas and high speed chairs. Intermediate and advanced skiers and snowboarders will get the most out of the extensive piste terrain such as tree and glacier runs, and long red runs, as well as the huge amount of challenging freeride areas, but being such a popular resort the slopes can get crowded.

For beginners there are gentle training areas, and experts will enjoy the black runs — one of which is used for World Cup slalom races — and some terrific off piste opportunities.

When the slopes shut down, the action continues in town. Sölden may not be the most family friendly ski resort — largely owing to the number of strip clubs and late night venues, but if you’re young, free and wanting to go crazy, you’ll find plenty of excitement in Sölden.

With over 80 bars, clubs and pubs to choose from, the resort is a paradise for party-goers, with free flowing alcohol and clubs staying open until the wee hours.

Favorites include Après Ski Philipp with great music and plenty of events, super cool Fire & Ice with resident DJ and laid back vibe, and Schirmbar Solden which belts out kitsch hits and singalong songs.

When you’ve worked up a hunger there are over 40 restaurants to suit all tastes, from pizzerias to top end fine dining.

Mayrhofen

Are you brave enough to tackle the 78 degree gradient of Harakiri, Austria’s steepest run? It is just one of the many features of the popular, family friendly Mayrhofen ski resort.

Skiers and snowboarders alike come here for the diverse terrain with its vertical drop of 1870 meters, and 55 runs making up 139 kilometers of piste — nearly all of which have snowmaking — serviced by 57 lifts.

With 29% blues and 47% reds, Mayrhofen provides plentiful intermediate and advanced terrain on relatively snow sure slopes, with wide challenging pistes and steeps above the treeline.

The remaining 24% of runs are black and include the aforementioned Harakiri as well as 5.5 kilometer piste with a vertical descent of 1,335 meters, plus a wealth of off piste terrain for expert skiers to enjoy.

There are special areas reserved for beginners, which although a little out of the way are sunny and safe, as well as a fantastic ski school.

The Penken Peak terrain park is perhaps the best in the Alps, and features 3 different lines with jumps for varying levels of ability, a halfpipe, boxes, kickers and rails, plus its own dedicated chairlift and a kid’s park for baby freeskiers and snowboarders.

The picturesque town with its attractive timber framed buildings, is typically Tyrolean. The locals at Mayrhofen are well known for their warm hospitality and love of music, which is clearly evident in the the resort’s lively après ski scene.

For parents with children there are a great selection of family friendly restaurants and bars, and for fun seekers there are some kicking late night spots. A

près often starts in Pilzbar at the Penken top station which pumps out Europop on the terrace, or one of the many other bars nearby, before moving on to town to top nightspots like the Arena Night Club and the Schlussel.

Söll

Söll ski resort in the SkiWelt area has been a destination for winter fun for families, intermediate skiers and snowboarders, and après ski junkies for decades.

Touting some of the most spectacular views of any Tyrolean ski resort, Söll benefits from a 4386 foot vertical drop, 295 inches of average seasonal snowfall with artificial snow-making covering 85% of marked runs(although quality snow can sometimes be a little lacking), and nearly 180 miles of piste with 225 runs separated into 43% blues, 45% reds, and 12% blacks, all serviced by 90 ski lifts.

Beginners can find their feet on the gentle valley slopes, before progressing onto the slopes – although some beginners may find even the easier slopes challenging. Long groomed cruisers including a fast 7km descent and tree skiing will keep intermediate to advanced skiers happy for days.

Experts may find the slopes a little less exciting, although there are some steep, challenging black runs and some pleasant off piste skiing.

3 terrain parks with varying obstacles including ramps, boxes and rails offer excellent opportunities for snowboarders .

Party goers and families alike will find plenty of entertainment in the relatively small but always buzzing Söll village.

This pretty little traditional mountain town has a large number of pubs, clubs and bars – many of which stay open into the early morning.

The Moonlight bar at the base area is where the fun kicks off in the afternoon, after which the party moves onto the village, where popular venues such as Salvenstadl and Whisky-Műhle disco offer live music, DJs, dancing and late night drinking.

There’s a good range of restaurants too, as well as a selection of quieter, more sophisticated bars.

The surrounding mountains offer surprisingly extensive skiing on generally uncrowded slopes. Alpbach is combined with the nearby Niederau ski area to createwhat has been named the Ski Juwel Alpbachtal Wildschönau ski area, with a total of 145km of piste comprising 71 runs (24% intermediate, 64% advanced, and 12% expert) covered by a fast and effective system of 47 ski lifts, which can be accessed from the village by public transport.

There is good skiing for beginners and intermediates, with tranquil nursery slopes and well groomed, wide pistes, including some exceptional red runs which descend all the way from the mountain peak to the valley floor.

Strong skiers can enjoy acres of challenging off piste terrain.

This resort is also one of Europe’s best destinations for night skiing, and there are 3 terrain parks for boarders and freeskiers.

The village of Alpbach with its quaint timber clad chalets, picturesque church, towering pine trees, and friendly atmosphere, is delightful.

However if you’re looking for a rowdy après ski scene, Alpbach may not be for you.

The village is small and mainly calm, although there are a handful of lively bars with music that stay open until late such as Joe’s Salett’l, Jakober and the Post. There are good dining options, one of which is Böglalm — famous for its spit-roasted chicken.

Ischgl

Also well known for hosting annual music events featuring international big name stars, Ischgl ski resort is heaven for winter holidaymakers, with diverse snow sure slopes, beautiful scenery, and plenty of après ski shenanigans for those that want them.

Ischgl can get pretty crowded at peak times, so be prepared to be patient. The ski area at the resort covers 172 kilometers of pistes and ski routes with 70% snowmaking spread over 1272 skiable acres, and features a vertical drop of almost 5000 feet.

Roughly half of the 85 runs are reds, with another 25% blues, which means that intermediate to advanced skiers have a whole heap of pistes to keep them amused, with varied terrain which includes well groomed cruisers, bowls, steep valley runs, and tree skiing.

Learners have a reasonable selection of sunny nursery slopes situated next to some gentle blues for easy progression.

3 awesome black runs start from the highest point of the Greitspitz, and there is also backcountry skiing and ungroomed off piste trails to keep experts happy.

Ischgl is also home to one of the best terrain parks in Europe — The Jeep Snowpark Ischgl — which features a halfpipe, ramps, rails and kickers, and 3 different lines for different abilities.

Dubbed the Ibiza of the Alps by many, Ischgl is a notorious party town, possibly more famous for its incredible, wild après ski scene, than for its skiing.

Both the town and the slopes are packed with bars and clubs. Kuhstall in the town center is a well established venue for fun where things already start hotting up in the afternoon, as is Kitzloch with music table dancing If you want to party alongside famous celebrities head to nightclubs Pacha or Arena, or for a quieter, more refined evening make tracks to one of the many cocktail bars. There are also a few lapdancing clubs if that’s your thing.

If you love food, you’ll love Ishgl. Award winning restaurants offer stylish cuisine, or for more affordable fare there are pizzerias, international restaurants, and pubs serving Tyrolean specialties.

Kitzbühel

185 km of glorious pistes await skiers at the vast Kitzbühel ski resort, which is host to the infamous annual Hahnenkamm downhill race.

Due to its low altitude, Kitzbühel can occasionally suffer when it comes to snow, but the 1401 skiable acres have nearly complete snowmaking coverage to ensure there is always sufficient white stuff on piste.

Spread across 3 different areas with a vertical drop of 3937 feet, the 68 runs are well suited to intermediate, advanced, and expert skiers and snowboarders, and are easy to access via the network of 54 ski lifts and cable cars.

The Streif World Cup racing piste is an extremely savage downhill run that will challenge even the most expert of skiers, and there is plenty of off piste skiing to be had in over 200 km of backcountry- even though it can sometimes be tricky to find.

Kitzbühel boasts lots of delightful long blues and reds for intermediate level skiers, and an above average number of family runs.

Novices may be harder to please, as nursery slopes are few, and can take time to reach, although there are nevertheless sunny slopes to learn on, and a special area for children.

A small area of mountain is given over to freeriders, and the DC Snowpark is a favorite of top freestylers from all over.

Historic Kitzbühel town is a medieval gem, with wonderful architecture, exquisite frescoes, and cobbled streets inside the ancient city walls.

Once a silver and copper mining community, Kitzbühel has evolved into a glitzy modern ski resort town filled with exclusive designer boutiques, fine restaurants, and chic bars and clubs that attract the rich, beautiful, and famous.

Nightlife in the town is buzzing and the party can sometimes get a little rowdy, with lots of lively bars and pubs to entertain after a day on the slopes.

Saalbach

Skicircus Saalbach Hinterglemm Leogang Fieberbrunn may be a bit of a mouthful, but this premier Austrian ski resort is brimming with pistes for all levels of skill with a 1256 meter vertical drop, 409 hectares of skiable terrain covering 5 different valleys, and 270 kilometers of slopes making it one of Austria’s biggest ski resorts.

Average snowfall is roughly 5 meters per season, which is boosted by a comprehensive snow making system.

70 lifts connect the 105 runs, with the majority of trails being blues and reds – 53% and 40% respectively – and the remaining 7% being blacks.

Piste trails are wide and impeccably groomed, with seemingly endless opportunities for intermediate to advanced skiers, including a rigorous 68km, 12,000 meter vertical ski circuit which makes the tour of almost the entire resort.

Off piste also provides excellent possibilities for fun, with wide, powder rich bowls, tree skiing, and challenging steeps. For children and those just starting out there are good beginner areas near both Saalbach and Hinterglemm villages.

Popular with both skiers and snowboarders, Saalbach also boasts 5 terrain parks, one of which is the impressive, world class Nitro Park, with a constantly evolving setup of rails, boxes, kickers and creative corners.

Most of the après ski action at the resort takes place mountainside and in the villages of Saalbach and neighboring Hinterglemm.

Zürs offers high altitude skiing with consistent snowfall, a 730 meter vertical drop, and 54 pistes with 30% beginner runs, 40% reds and blues, and 30% expert runs.

Beginners and intermediates will get a lot out of Zürs, with plenty of lovely long red and blue runs, and recently improved nursery slopes with good snowmaking.

For more advanced skiers and snowboards there is an abundance of steep and deep off-piste on generally uncrowded slopes, as well as some fantastic expert level off piste skiing for those who hire a guide.

Just 10 minutes drive from Zürs — the 2 resorts share an interlinked ski pass — the even more exclusive Lech ski resort is where the rich and famous come in droves to ski, pamper themselves, and party.

Those who come to ski and snowboard get to enjoy uncrowded slopes with reliable snowfall, a 1360 meter vertical, 4 good nursery runs, 18 blacks, a staggering 80 reds, and 42 blues, which together create 280 kilometers of piste, with varied terrain including forgiving blue runs, moguls, wide, sweeping groomed trails, and lots of opportunities for experts in the off piste terrain.

Lech also has a very decent terrain park with nearly 20 features and three separate lines for different skill levels.

Much livelier than Zürs, Lech ski resort has cosmopolitan bars and restaurants aplenty, and the village itself is full of charm in a pretty riverside setting.

The highest village in Austria, Obergurgl ski resort in the Ötz Valley has a rich skiing history and an outstanding snow record.

The 1280 meter vertical, super modern 24 ski lift system, and quiet slopes allow for excellent ski and snowboarding fun at all levels of ability.

This is a popular resort with families due to the excellent ski schools, and wide, flat, treeless beginner runs and some easy blues.

There are 20 km of black pistes which include the steep Hohe Mut run and some challenging moguls, as well as a huge amount of serious off piste terrain.

For the intermediate and advanced there are 55 km of long, fast, undulating red runs and twisting tree trails.

Obergurgl village is small and quaint with an early 18th century church, but this tranquil facade nevertheless conceals a good number of bars, beer kellers, restaurants and clubs for traditional style après ski entertainment.

The Josl-Keller is a late night club with DJs and a great ambiance, and on the mountain the Nederhutte features Lederhosen clad staff, live music four nights a week and table dancing.

Hohe Mut Alm on the slopes is the very essence of Tyrolean cuisine, and Edelweiss & Gurgl in the village serves an elegant Austrian / international fusion menu.
